Attracts all eyes

Pocophone F1 from the Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi has created a lot of hype. At an impressively low cost, it has high performance at the level of flagship models. In this regard, Xiaomi has surpassed even OnePlus devices, previously known as extremely affordable: Poco F1 in the basic version costs about 240$.

The design of the Poco F1 is also comparable to the top models: the display has very thin bezels, it occupies 82.2% of the front panel of the smartphone. «Bangs», like the iPhone X, in its place. In addition to the speaker and front camera, it also has an infrared sensor built into it. Thanks to him, the smartphone can be used for the face recognition system.Oddly enough, but at the same time we had to tinker a little: we managed to add these faces only after changing the region to India. However, after that, unlocking through face recognition worked very quickly, even in dark rooms. It is not known how reliable the recognition is, although during tests with a fake face in the portrait, we were not able to deceive the system.

The fingerprint scanner is located in a convenient place: on the back side directly below the dual camera. He reacted quickly and without hangups. The Poco F1 weighs 182 grams, which is quite a lot, although it’s not uncomfortably heavy. When you pick up a smartphone, it becomes clear what Xiaomi saved on. The Pocophone F1 is wrapped in plastic — and it looks a bit cheap. But on the case there are no greasy fingerprints. And the Poco F1 is not water resistant, but the device comes with a protective case.

Excellent LC display

The gadget has a large LC display with a diagonal of 6.18 inches and an aspect ratio of 18.7:9. Only people with very large hands will be able to control the smartphone with one hand. The screen has a resolution of 1080×2246 pixels (Full-HD +), while the dot density is 416 ppi.

Colors and contrast aren’t as rich and punchy as OLED displays, but that’s a drawback to consider given the smartphone’s low cost. The standard brightness of the Pocophone F1 is 467.6 cd / m2 — this is a good indicator, although the Samsung Galaxy S9 model is, of course, much brighter. The content on the screen looks bright enough, but in strong sunlight it is already difficult to read the display.

Large battery and powerful hardware

With a 4000 mAh battery, the Xiaomi Pocophone F1 battery is even bigger than the Galaxy S9 Plus (3500 mAh) or iPhone X (2700 mAh). The difference in size noticeably affects the endurance of the smartphone: in the mode of continuous web surfing, the gadget lasted 13.5 hours. Thus, the battery should last without problems for a day or two, depending on the intensity of use of the device. Via USB Type-C and Quick Charge 3.0, the battery is fully charged in approximately 130 minutes. The model does not support wireless charging.

Most of all, we were pleased with the performance of the device. This is because the top-end Snapdragon 845 processor is installed inside the Pocophone F1, which is also used in other current flagship models. Depending on the version of the model, the smartphone is equipped with 6 or 8 GB of RAM and 64, 128 or 256 GB of internal memory. The device responds quickly to commands and offers a large reserve of performance, including for demanding mobile gaming. With it, liquid cooling effectively removes the generated heat.

The gadget has a hybrid slot for SIM-cards — instead of the second SIM, you can install a Micro-SD memory card. There are no compromises when it comes to communication: the Pocophone F1 supports LTE Cat 18 at speeds up to 1200 Mbps. However, this is only a theoretical advantage for now, as many LTE networks are only capable of operating at speeds up to 500 Mbps.

Photos «like everyone else»

The Pocophone F1 has a dual camera with 12 and 5 megapixel sensors, the maximum aperture is f/1.9 and f/2.0. The 5 MP module is responsible for the depth of field and the creation of the Bokeh effect for portrait shooting. The front camera received a 20 megapixel matrix with an f/2.0 lens hood. Movies can be recorded in 4K resolution at a maximum speed of 30 fps and in Full-HD resolution at a super slow speed of 240 fps. There is no optical image stabilizer here, and there is also no optical zoom.

Despite all this, the pictures taken during the tests are difficult to criticize. The dual camera requires a slight delay to release the shutter, although focusing is very fast here. In daylight, pictures are clear, detailed and have natural colors. In poor lighting or at dusk, the pictures become a little blurry. However, the details remain distinguishable, and the noise is within reason. For the price range «about 200$» this is a good result.

There is only one front camera, and although the Bokeh effect is possible, it does not always work out well: the edges of the object look a little fuzzy. In general, the photo quality of Xiaomi Pocophone F1 is good. The difference with the flagship luxury models, such as Huawei P20 Pro or Samsung Galaxy Note 9, becomes noticeable when shooting at dusk and when comparing the functionality (in particular, zoom) of the camera.

Android 8.1 Oreo in MIUI design

Android 8.1 Oreo is preinstalled as the operating system. Xiaomi promises to release an update to Android 9.0 Pie before the end of this year. «MIUI for Poco» is a pretty visual Android user interface. However, the settings are a bit lacking in structure: the categories are not rationally defined, and some options take too long to find. App-Drawer handles this better: you can group apps by color or category yourself.

The Poco F1 is equipped with Bluetooth 5.0 and a classic 3.5mm headphone jack. The device does not support NFC — and this is very strange, given the rest of the “top stuffing” of the gadget.

Should I take Xiaomi Pocophone F1?

Processor from the latest «dragons», 6.18-inch display, durable battery with a capacity of 4000 mAh. Xiaomi Pocophone F1 is at the level of flagship models and at the same time costs significantly less than top-end smartphones from Samsung, Apple or Huawei. In the basic version with 6 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal memory, Poco F1 costs about 240$. With a storage capacity of 128 GB, a novelty from China will cost the buyer about 300$. Thus, Xiaomi Poco F1 is a top smartphone at an attractive price.

Too good to be true? In fact, there are snags. Firstly, the gadget does not support NFC, although today even budget models are equipped with it. Secondly, the smartphone cannot play movies and series from Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Hulu in HD quality, as it does not support Google’s Widevine L1 protection. Most streaming services use this protection mechanism to prevent the copying and misuse of video files.

Poco F1 only supports L3 protection, which allows you to play videos at a maximum resolution of 540p. And updating the firmware will not be able to solve this problem. However, it is irrelevant for the Russian market.

Test results

Xiaomi Pocophone F1 made a very good impression on us: with a relatively low cost, it stands out against the background of top competitors. In terms of performance, the gadget is at the level of the flagship models, and the battery life here is first-class. However, in the list of equipment, we missed the protection against water and the NFC module.

The camera of the gadget is good, and it is quite possible to close your eyes to small shortcomings in work in twilight lighting at this price of the device. The Full-HD+ display could have been brighter in bright sunlight, but we can’t fault it either.

Alternative: OnePlus 6 128GB

The OnePlus 6 can’t compete with the Pocophone F1 on price, but it offers better photo quality (there’s a zoom lens), an OLED display with richer colors, a high-quality glass body, and NFC support.
