In the spring of 2022, 70mai, a sub-brand of Xiaomi, released an interesting Dash Cam model — Dash Cam M500. This is a compact gadget without a display and with built-in eMMC memory, which is many times faster than conventional flash drives. The device was equipped with an ADAS driver assistance system, which monitors the situation on the road and warns of dangers, and a GPS / Glonass module, and the resolution of the video it shoots is 2592×1944 pixels.
Package contents 70mai Dash Cam M500
The manufacturer put a lot of things and accessories in the box along with the DVR, but not all of them will be useful to the user (for example, only one of the two power cables is needed to connect the device). The kit includes:
- device 70mai Dash Cam M500;
- windshield mount on double-sided tape (there is a spare wheel);
- 2 USB charger;
- power cable 3.5 meters long;
- tool for laying cables under the interior trim;
- cable for connecting a video recorder with a power converter;
- user’s manual.
The cable installation tool looks like a small plastic spatula. With its help, the user can carefully bend the interior trim and lay the cable into the resulting gap.
Using an additional cable with a converter, the device can be connected to the car’s on-board network. At one end of the cable there is a Type-C connector, and at the other end there are three multi-colored wires so that you don’t confuse anything when connecting.
70mai Dash Cam M500 is a compact gadget with a stylish design. The case has a rectangular shape in the form of a neat bar with smoothed edges and rounded corners.
The device can be mounted on the windshield under the ceiling, and it will not even be noticeable behind the rear-view mirror. At the same time, the wire is carefully wound up behind the casing and stretched to the cigarette lighter or other power source, and does not hang down in front of the driver’s eyes.
The lens is located on the front side of the DVR. Under it, the designers created a neat black glossy insert with a diagonal bevel. On the other half of the case, the inscription 70mai is placed on a gray background. It looks concise and aesthetically pleasing.
On the back of the device case there is a small recess with a QR code and the main characteristics. Here, on the opposite side, the name and model of the DVR are applied. On the top and bottom of the body of the device there are neat holes for ventilation.
At one end of the case there is a Type-C connector for connecting power and a microphone. On the opposite end is the only button with an LED indicator. It only turns on the device. Everything else is controlled by voice commands or a mobile app.
Mounting the device on glass
To fix the DVR on the windshield, the manufacturer suggests using a strip of double-sided tape. A mount is glued to it, into which the registrar itself is inserted. Holds firmly and securely. If you need to move the gadget to another car, there is a spare double-sided tape in the kit, which is cut to the desired size.
70mai M500 produces a high-quality image at a resolution of 2592×1944 pixels. Detailing at a high level, the picture is bright and saturated. All the smallest objects in front of the car are clearly visible, including license plates of other cars, road signs and markings.
At night, the registrar also produces an impressive picture. The quality of the video is enough to understand any situation that has arisen on the road.
The device shoots video in an aspect ratio of 4:3 and has a wide viewing angle of 170 degrees. This is a good indicator, thanks to which you can even see the numbers of a car approaching in a perpendicular plane — for example, when a car with a registrar is driving along the main road, and another car is approaching from the side along a secondary road.
There is voice control, but only in English. The registrar is able to take photos by the Take a photo command. There is also a Shoot emergency video command, by which the device records an emergency video. With the phrase Stop sound recording, you can turn off sound recording, and Sound record on turn it back on.
Why is there no memory card
Instead of a traditional microSD memory card slot, the manufacturer has installed built-in storage such as eMMC 5.1. Depending on the version, its volume is 32, 64 or 128 GB. This built-in storage is characterized by increased write and read speeds compared to most microSD cards. You can download video from memory to your phone or by connecting the recorder to a computer with a cable.
Interesting DVR Features
The DVR was equipped with an ADAS driver assistant, which warns the driver with a voice message about lane departure, the risk of collision when leaving the lane and the approach of pedestrians. The system needs to be calibrated according to the markup, but it is poorly drawn on city streets, the function will not work correctly.
A GPS and Glonass module was built into the registrar, which determines the location of the car in real time even in areas where satellite communications are poor. The device captures all the data about the trip — from the exact coordinates to the speed and time.
All settings, as well as viewing the records made, are carried out through the official mobile application. The smartphone is connected to the recorder via Wi-Fi.
Separately, you can buy Xiaomi pressure control sensors (work via Wi-Fi) and air temperature in the wheels. With their help, the application will constantly monitor the condition of the tires, and, if necessary, issue a notification. Also, the registrar will issue a corresponding voice notification.
The shock sensor (G-sensor) built into the device allows for round-the-clock monitoring in front of the car. The DVR detects any collisions and shocks, starting recording potential incidents. If such a recording is made during parking, the device will notify the owner of this by voice notification the next time it is turned on.
To prevent the recorder from draining the battery, you can separately purchase a special set of cables with a voltage controller. As soon as the battery voltage drops to a predetermined level, 70mai M500 will automatically turn off. This eliminates problems when starting the engine, especially in the winter season.
